This module was developed based on some discussions in
the German ZIMO forum. It
provides additional power for CAN bus devices. The MX1 delivers up to 2A
current to power cabs and modules. This is enough for medium sized layouts.
One MX9 requires 135-150mA. Bigger layouts run into power problems.
Also longer CAN Bus cabling will cause too much voltage los, as the single
wires in the cables are pretty thin. Weak power supply causes unreliable
operation in the beginning and may stop operation at all if the problem gets
too heavy. Symptoms can be ghost occupation, ignored halt commands or
freezing locos. Another application for this module are environments with
MX31ZL. If the switching power supply of the MX31ZL is set to lower
voltages, the CAN Bus supply will be not sufficient. The power supply module
addresses that power problem. The module is inserted like any other CAN bus
device using the RJ12 connectors. There is no need to cut cables or solder
directly on modules. The power supply module generates a stabilized voltage.
The (+) line is interrupted to avoid loopbacks. There are additionally 2
ground connectors as well.
The module needs to
be powered with a external 25V transformer. A DC source can be used as well.
the power source should be able to provide 40VA or more. To protect the CAN
Bus cable the module limits it#s output current to 1,5A. On request it is
possible to build 3A or 5A versions as well. These versions should nit be
used on standard CAN bus cables as the cable may melt if high current is
used. The power supply module is
available as
empty PCB, kit or built up module with case. The
assembled module comes in the same case as the MX7 module from ZIMO. It fits
perfectly to the other modules on the layout. Mounting holes are on the same
expected positions. For small applications,
typically MX31ZL environments I offer a compact switching power supply with
0,75A (NT_24_075)
